Copies of info on the Thirtieth Phantom II, number F-4A 145312. This aircraft was thought for a long time to not have any photos ever taken of it’s short life!
F-4H-l (F-4A) aircraft, BUNO 145312 arrived at the General Electric
Edwards Flight Test Facility from McDonnell, St. Louis, on
27 March l960. _
The aircraft was flown for J-79 engine development testing
purposes. On l3 July 1960, G.E. Test Pi1ot Elliott See
(later an astronaut) had just completed a take-off from
Edwards AFB when a major fire erupted in the fuselage. In
an attempt to save the aircraft, See executed a l80 turn
and landed-immediately, but the fire persisted and before
finally being extinguished, major damage had resulted.
The aircraft was scrapped at Edwards a short time later.
G.E. records also indicate that the aircraft was Production
No. l3 and had l3 total flights and l8 hours total tine.
