Souvenir of America's First Space Flight (Reblog)

Forty Years of F-15 Air Supremacy (Reblog)

In 2012, Jack Abercrombie wrote several articles and a slide show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the F-15’s first flight. They detail the challenges of bringing along a new aircraft and the changes that were required to the airframe to enable it to be the world class fighter that it became.

Unpainted F-15’s and F-18’s (Reblog)

Even after coming out of the paint booth (Bldg 48), McDonnell aircraft still had a lot of finish work to be completed before they could be delivered. We were issued and required to wear “booties” when ever we had to climb around on the aircraft; but, still the new paint jobs were scuffed, marked and scraped resulting in an inevitable paint cleaning and touch-up cycle having to be preformed! . After many years of complaining (Including yours truly), it was decided to finish the aircraft, flight test and then paint them. This resulted in unpainted aircraft flying around. A very strange sight to us long time employees conditioned to seeing painted flying aircraft; but, one can clearly see the different aluminum, composite or fiberglass sections of each aircraft. These planes have their own beauty!

F4H-1 #6 (BuNo 143391) during the carrier suitability trials prelims at the Naval Air Test Center (NATC) at Pax River in 1961. I believe that this is a complete sequence of photos. I have also included a color sideview of the aircraft at NATC and a color photo of it on the USS Independence (W/O nose boom).

MDC Aircraft Colors Booklet(Reblog)

  In 1980 the International Plastic Modeler Society (IPMS) held their regional convention in St. Louis. It was known as Multicon '80. Three of us who worked at McDonnell Douglas and were IPMS St. Louis members decided that we should have a booklet as a free giveaway for the MultiCon. We titled it "McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Colors" with many three view drawings and paint schemes of F – 18, AV-8B, F-15 and F4 aircraft complete with paint chips.

Obtaining accurate color information is one of the most vexing problems facing an aviation historian or a modeler. This booklet attempts to solve this problem for the McDonnell Douglas aircraft. The paint chips in this book were painted at the same time as the aircraft and are, therefore, as accurate as can be provided. The camouflage patterns shown this book were taken from official MDC drawings. All color chips were provided by the McDonnell aircraft company paint shop.
