General Electric AN/ALQ-87 Configurations

ALQ-87001 A copy of the General Electric AN/ALQ-87 Configurations brochure. Dated June 6 1972.

“The AN/A LQ-87, currently an operational and proven ECM
pod system, has inherent design features that may be utilized
in 3 80 different configurations by the employment of versatile
mounting hardware.
The mini-back provides an interface between any of the
inventoried canisters and 14-inch mounting brackets. The
pylon adapter interfaces between either three or four canisters,
together with their low voltage power supplies and primary
power adapter, and any standard 14-inch or 30-inch pylon
mounting bracket.
The use of the adapter increases the effectiveness of the
AN/A LO-87 system by permitting additional ECM capabilities
to be combined into one pod.”

AN/ALQ-119/101/131

1 ALQ-119-005  Original photos from Westinghouse Co. files.

“The ALQ-131 is an advanced electronic countermeasures (ECM) pod designed to provide an aircraft self-protection against radar threats. The ALQ-131 accomplishes this by responding with a combination of noise, repeater or transponder electronic jamming techniques. The pod weighs 600 pounds, with modular design for multiple frequency band capability. It has an ability to be quickly re-programmed against changing threats. The ALQ-131 is used by A-10, F-16 and F-111 aircraft. Other ECM pod systems being used by USAF aircraft include the ALQ-119 and ALQ-184.” (From the National Museum of the Air Force.)

“The AN/ALQ-131 Electronic Countermeasures (ECM) pod is the most successful ECM system ever built. Northrop Grumman has fielded more than 1,600 ALQ-131 pods, which used state-of-the-art technology to successfully protect aircrews and aircraft in every conflict since becoming operational.

To stay ahead of new and emerging threats with advanced capabilities, Northrop Grumman revolutionized the ALQ-131 through the insertion of digital technology. The architecture is a derivative of technologies from the most capable fighter aircraft, including F-16 Block 60 and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. This upgrade does not change the pod’s size, weight or power requirements; neither does it induct any mandatory aircraft modification.” (From Northrop Grumman website.)
