In 1971 and 1972, I worked as a Polysonic Wind Tunnel (PSWT) test conductor for McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. In the small front lobby outside the tunnel control room was a display model of the McDonnell 156. Other than these pictures, which I took, I can find no other info. It appears to me as a proposed entry into the 1960’s Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) requirements ultimately resulting in the F-111. Anyone have any further info?

Yep, this was the McDonnell design for the TFX program. This model seems to be the earlier Air Force design with side-by-side seating.
Please find more pics and info on this and other TFX designs on my web forum here:

Also has a string family resemblance to the earliest Model 199 studies for FX which can be found here:

Thanks for this info!
It does seem to be the McDonnell US Navy TFX competitor of General Dynamics F-111
I don't suppose you have any more mysterious models you need identifying?
:)
It’s 10 years since OP posted the pictures, but what’s the cutaway model in the case behind? It looks to me like the AMX “Ghibli” the Brazilians built with the Italians 20 years later
Who is OP?
